“AMERICAN COUNTRY LOVE SONG” – JAKE OWEN
You may not have realized it, but, Jake Owen hasn’t released an album in nearly two and a half years. Yeah, he released a non-album single last year called “Real Life,” but it’s been awhile since we’ve had a full-length album.
I’m one of those people who thinks there is more to an artist than just a single every now and again. I like to hear how different artists develop their sound throughout their career. The anticipation for his fifth studio album, set to be released this summer, is killing me.
But I can’t complain too much. We’re finally getting our first taste of this new record.
Owen has said in interviews that he’s going for more of a 90’s vibe for this new record. “American Country Love Song,” revels that small town U.S.A. love story. Like Owen describes in the chorus, in every town there’s a country boy lookin’ for love in that that blue eyed country girl. He describes the ideas of a modern day country love; like “daddy getting mad cause you came home late,” “playing in the night air,” “one last kiss in the driveway,” or “butterflies and Bud Lights.” Owen touches on those symbols of American love that any person could relate to within their own love story. From the cheerleaders to the quarterbacks and, of course, the cowboys and cowgirls.
When I first heard the song, I could feel myself driving down a backroad on a summer night or heck even a summer day would bring that goodtime feeling. With its steel guitar and drum heavy sound, it’s sure to be a feel-good summer hit. In an interview with Nash Country Weekly, Owen said the song has a sense of freedom while being young and adventurous. I couldn’t agree more.
Owen has fined tuned his artistry for this project. I’d say, he found himself as an artist with Barefoot Blue Jean Night. (Which I played from top to bottom everyday all summer that year.) Then when he came out with Days of Gold, we heard a much more established sound. And with the success of Barefoot Blue Jean Night he had more artistic freedom to explore. Now he’s taken all of that and fine-tuned it into what could be perfection.
He’s said that he’s going for more of a concept album. A record you could listen to from top to bottom and each track fits sonically together. I can’t tell you how much I can’t wait to hear this new record this summer. I haven’t even heard the whole album yet but I get the feeling it’s going to be one of my favorites.
